CSI arrives on Union Island

E-Waste, is a term that is uncommon to most persons in St Vincent and the Grenadines but can pose a serious threat to humans and the environment.

Construction Solutions Inc. (CSI), is a non-profit organisation based in SVG that is leading a drive for education, proper disposal and recycling of E-Waste in SVG.

On January 1st 2016, Construction Solutions Inc. conducted their first awareness seminar on Union Island. This seminar is the first of a series that is to be held under “Phase 2” of their GEF-SGP\UNDP funded project “Developing Good Environmental Practices for Managing and Disposal of Hazardous Materials found in E-Waste across St. Vincent & the Grenadines”.

The project seeks to increase awareness and educate the general population on better environmental practices when disposing of Electronic Waste.

Participants at the workshop were informed on what is E-Waste which are electronic products that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete, and have essentially reached the end of their useful life.

When electronics end up in landfills, dangerous chemicals like lead, mercury, and cadmium leach into the soil and water making it a hazard to humans and animals.

Dr Ashley John, founder of CSI  shared an overview of the project, he warned that persons should start thinking about how E-Waste can affect them and learn how to dispose them correctly such as not to dump them with regular garbage, but at a collection facility. He also warned persons not to burn electronic waste which will release chemicals into the atmosphere.

John stated that the plan is to setup a main collection facility on St Vincent which will take apart devices, and send them out of the country for recycling. E-Waste will be collected from the Grenadines and on main-land St Vincent.

At the seminar two volunteers had the chance to take apart a desktop computer and identify the various components, similar to what will be done at the main facility.

Similar seminars will be held in Bequia, Canouan, Leeward, Windward and Central Kingstown.
