Union Island observes Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

The month of October 2017 is Cancer Awareness Month, and the Union Island Health center will be having a series of activities on the Island geared towards informing the public about Breast and Prostate cancers.

Some of these activities include: educational seminars in the clinics, breast examinations, a cancer walk, school paragraph writing competition.

Through these activities the health team is hoping to encourage early detection and treatment for Breast Cancer and regular Prostate checks for men.

Lorene Jones, Health Nurse Supervisor of the Southern Grenadines told us in a brief interview that in order to reduce the risk of cancer, persons should change their lifestyle, food diet, exercise regularly and also reduce the amount of alcohol intake.

Jones is encouraging young persons to know their bodies so that they would be able to detect changes and seek early treatment.

“It is important for women to do self-breast examination in order to know the shape, size, texture and of their breast” Jones said. She stated that females should start checking for breast cancer as soon as they start menstruating.

Men should start checking for prostate cancer from the age of 40 and over, and earlier if prostate cancer is known to affect your relatives.

Radio Grenadines covered a recent educational seminar presented by Nurse Cletus Forde at the Clifton Health Center. In his presentation, he covered the location of the prostate gland and also features of the Breast. Persons received information on how to conduct a self-breast examination.

The annual breast and prostate cancer walk will take place on Friday October 20th starting at 4pm from the Clifton Hill and end at the Hugh Mulzac Square via the village of Ashton.
